Thulamor slumped to the floor, the magic gone from his hand, his body exhausted from the use of power. Millie rushed to him, propping up his head, and caressing his cheek. The echo of the demonic creature was already starting to fade, the tendrils of rot evaporating.

Millie cradled Thulamor to her, lit only by the soft glow of Heralde’s ghostly gleam, and star light that filtered down into the basement.

“Are you okay? Are you alright, Thulamor? Talk to me.”

“Fine. F…fine,” he said, batting weakly at her arm. “I’m…fine.”

“You are not fine,” she said, pushing his arm back down. “You just expelled a demon, and used magic for the first time to do it. You are anything but fine.”

“My lady,” Heralde said, stepping from a shadow, “I believe the gentleman may want to protect his dignity a bit.”

Thulamor blinked, staring up at Heralde, then rubbed his eyes. “Who is that? And why is he acting so familiar with you?”

“Heralde? You can see him still?” Millie asked.

“It seems the magic block has been broken,” Heralde said, standing a little straighter. “Whatever that demon did while it was inside your young friend, it has opened up the magical channels that were once blocked off.”

“Then he’ll be able to perform magic,” Millie said, biting her lip. That wasn’t necessarily a good thing. Thulamor had a temper, and another weapon at his disposal may not have been a good thing.

“What are you talking about?” Thulamor asked. Stronger, he managed to push himself upright. “And you're not answering the first question either; who is that?” he asked again, thrusting a finger towards Heralde.

“The ghost?” Emilie asked, almost hoping he was talking about something else. Thulamor had known she saw the dead, but she had never been sure if he believed her or not, only that he knew she believed it. But believing someone else saw something was entirely different from seeing it yourself. And how did she explain that she was being haunted by a ghost?

Thulamor nodded, though slowly, one hand pressed to his head, the other steadying himself against the wall. His eyes never left Heralde.

“Thulamor, this is Heralde. He is my companion, and link to the other side. He has been with me for longer than I can remember.”

Thulamor rubbed his eyes, blinking a few times, then swiped a hand through Heralde’s presence to feel the cold place where Heralde resided.

“This…I…I wasn’t sure you were telling the truth,” Thulamor finally said, looking a little sheepish. “He’s been with you since the beginning? Since before we met?”

Millie nodded. “I found him roaming the back streets of one of the cities I passed through, and as soon as he realized I could see him he started following me around.”

“Well,” Heralde said, putting his thumbs in his pockets and smiling from beneath his thick mustache, “you have to admit you are far more entertaining than most of my kind.”

Millie gave him a sour look, and turned her back on him. It never helped to encourage his cheekiness.

“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you,” said Thulamor.
